The Selkirk Rex is one of the youngest cat breeds, originating from a spontaneous genetic mutation. Unlike other “Rex” breeds, its curly coat is governed by a dominant gene, making it unique among cats with wavy fur.

Since the breed's recognition, the look of the Selkirk Rex has changed significantly under the influence of selection and breeding. Today, it's hard to compare the modern sturdy Selkirk with the first individuals of the breed. After all, the first Selkirk was clearly not "rounded," whereas today that word is the most important in describing the Selkirk Rex.

The Selkirk Rex is a relatively young breed, born from a natural genetic mutation. Unusual cats in curly coats were born quite often, but they would end up in the hands of owners who failed to notice their uniqueness and distinctiveness. The same fate could have befallen the Selkirk—a completely new gene, forming a curly coat, could have once again slipped into obscurity. But a fortunate twist of fate changed everything!
